Deezer.com and how to bypass their GeoIP location tool

If, like me, you have been using the site deezer.com , you may have noticed that most of the songs are greyed out, and there is no way of playing them.

For those who do not know it, the site deezer lets you play music online for free. The site is neat and the interface friendly and easy to use. And most importantly the choice of music is quite important.

After some research, I found out that the site is based in France (by that I actually mean the company), and if you are accessing the site from outside of France then for copyright reasons you won't be able to play most of the songs (they use GeoIP location for that, which is finding out where you are from your IP address).
Fortunately there is a trick, for firefox users (and opera users apparently, although I have not tried it).

First you will need to download greasemonkey , a Firefox extension that allows you to customize the way webpages look and function.

Once you have installed it install the Deezer Version 2 Unlocker.

And there you go, you should now be able to use deezer as if you were in France, and have access to all of the songs and albums.

(once you're at it you might as well install the deezer ads remover)

Please let me know if you know of other ways to use deezer outside of France, say on internet explorer for instance.

Very nice, but it doesn't work for all songs. For example the album 'Rules Of Enragement' by 'Lewis Black' remains grayed out.

Any thoughts?

I think they've updated deezer now and this trick probably does not work anymore. Rules Of Enragement is indeed greyed out, I'll post a solution if I find out. You should know that due to copyright problems some songs are not available in some countries. One temporary solution is to use a proxy, there are solutions such as tor project which let you do that, the settings need to be tweaked to have a good experience, there's documentation on their site.

something i noticed in the UK is that deezer does not work properly with firefox 3, so I'm using google chrome for it, most of the songs and albums work. I also found that it's good to have deezer running in one browser, and surfing using a different one, as it will not stop playing if i open a site which crashes my current browser. In my case, google chrome is only used for deezer.

Have been searching for a long time for a workaround the Deezer Geo restriction problem to no avail until I found your site. Followed all your instructions and have now got songs which were previously greyed working through google chrome. Thanks

I have not tried the javascript:document.cookie = "COUNTRY = FR";location.reload(true); code myself (except on firefox but it does not work); but I think you will need to clear your cache if you are having issues after entering it into the address bar? That can easily be done by going into the browsers options? Alternatively if you used any of the greasemonkey scripts you can disable them in the Tools -> Greasemonkey tab

The tip discussed on the article is not currently useful.
Immediate result with
javascript:document.cookie = "COUNTRY = FR";location.reload(true);
Thanks a lot, now I can play old Genesis albums with no problem.

the javascript:document.cookie = "COUNTRY = FR";location.reload(true);

As of today there does not seem to be any good work around to use deezer oustide of france - or at least in the UK. I would suggest using a french proxy if you really wanted to use it, with the implications of that; or use an alternative solution. I have been trying spotify lately, it's not as good in my opinion, there's also quite a lot of adverts but it works in the UK at least. Please update this website if you do have a work around for the deezer site.

Ok. I made deezer work for me just a minute ago and I can give you some hints. Of course I can't say it will work for everybody but it should.

Follow the instructions from here: http://globalpandora.com/Vidalia_Bundle

BUT!!! We're not going to make pandora work, but deezer, so you have to make several changes:

1. Download and install the Vidalia Bundle from here: http://www.torproject.org/easy-download.html.en
(Installation Bundle for Windows).

2. Line 2: exitnodes
Here you have to past the names of French servers. You will find online ones in Vidalia - click "Show network" then sort them by country (second, plain tab) and choose several names (at least ten).

3. Go to tor.pac on your drive. Open it with notepad and change www.pandora.com for www.deezer.com.

Now open deezer and at the bottom of the page you should see:

Your country is : FR

Enjoy!

Using Tor would definitely work. For me it's not ideal as I use firefox for internet browsing as well as music; therefore all the connections would go through proxy, and it's just too slow for normal use, as well as unsecure for some sensible operations such as internet banking, online purchases etc.

In another hand, I just checked deezer today and some of the albums I could not play some time ago are now available; most of the international stuff seems to be available, french music is not available though

Another idea would be to search the songs which have been greyed out for other versions which are available. For example for your love of the yardbirds is in my playlist greyed out but if I search it on deezer I get versions which still play. Now a very nice tool would be one which searches this automatically for every song which is grey and lets you select that song which you want to replace it with... Sometimes they don't have rights for a certain album but the same song on an album from another company will be available. Anybody knows if this already exists?

Just found this one also:
This site is located in france and just streams your playlist from their server so you bypass the geoip restrictions it without real proxies etc...
Copy the link from a playlist for example: http://www.deezer.com/en/music/playlist/selectionfilip-15419302
to the "Insérez un lien de playlist DEEZER ou JIWA" space on http://mewzeec.com/ then it will play your playlist in their player, it seems to shuffle from itself without the option to turn it off but does have potential...

More info in french on http://www.korben.info/deezer-comment-lire-les-chansons-bloquees-grisees-des-playlists.html

greets,
Filip
